AN INTRODUCTORY TRAINING SESSION FOR ALL GUNDOGS and MINOR BREEDS

It’s been a while since the WSSCSW has hosted a training day – particularly for younger dogs or new owners wishing to try out the experience of working in the field – the activity for which Welsh Springers were originally bred.

janey and outMany owners with new puppies have joined the club over the past couple of years, so due to popular demand the club’s new Working Secretary, Jane Sutherland, has organised a day of training at the purpose-built Rickneys Training ground in Hertfordshire (visit rickneys.com). Janey has a great deal of experience of working her dogs (the Jacranella kennels) and has had notable succes in Working Assessments and Field Trials - so this is a great opportunity to get the benefit of her experience.

It is intended that this session will be the start of a course of regular training sessions and whilst it is provided by the Welsh Springer Club of South Wales, and we hope Welshie owners will take advantage of this opportunity, all breeds of Gundog are welcome.

Although this training is aimed at progressing to Working Assessments and Field Trials it will give you and your dog an ideal grounding for a happy, obedient dog in everyday life.

CGTD December
The course will cover all aspects of working training from basic obedience, sit, stay and heel commands and will lead to retrieving, hunting and water work.

Whistles, dummies, etc. will be available but please bring along your own equipment if you can. You should have a slip lead for field work and if your dog has a favourite lure bring that along too. All training will be done to the whistle and in the working dog world we don't mean a traditional referee's whistle, a dog whistle is set to a particular pitch that your dog will come to recognise, you may need to experiment with various pitches to find the best to suit you and your dog.

Don't forget - dress appropriately with sturdy footwear and clothing to suit the terrain and weather conditions - there can be a lot of hanging around while other 'pupils' get to grips with the lesson.

The Venue

Rickneys Gundog Training Ground is a purpose built facility with a variety of terrain and features to suit all levels of abilities - all enclosed in a safe and secure environment. There's grassland, woodland, hedges, ditches, water (fast flowing and still), fenced paddocks - you name it, it's there. Visit their website (click title above) to see all that you can expect to find there - we won't be using all the facilities from the outset but as the course progresses.
