Dogs Judge – Ms Sharon Barkley – (Cherryheath)

I was brought up with Cockers Spaniels and as the time was well before the internet there is no evidence apart from 1 black and white photograph of a young ponytailed me with my beloved Mandy at a show.

In 1994 my parents introduced me to a lodger that their next door neighbours were looking after. It was a beautifully well behaved red & white dog (Ruby) that was sitting quietly in the drive, I was hooked and set to trying to find one for myself. It is difficult finding a litter now and was no easier then and I remember ringing any number of breeders together with visiting a show to meet some of them.

Eventually Bill & Trudy Short invited me to look at a litter and Parkmist Mr Jinks (Jones) was chosen, as a pet that I might show. I soon found out that all WSSs were not angels like Ruby, Jones certainly required a fair degree of my patience in his early years.

I joined a breed club and was automatically sent a schedule for a show so entered Jones in every class that he was entitled to go in from Puppy to Open knowing no better. He did get a place and rosette, currently framed with the prize card. I was hooked, he did in fact win BPIS at one of his early shows.

Jones and I learnt together and to my amazement he was awarded the DCC at Crufts 2000 by Maggie Mullins and went on to gain his title.

Jones was followed by Thomas (Parkmist Mr Frisk) who was also made up, Seren (Parkmist Miss Temptation) and Tegan (Parkmist Miss Flirtatious). You may have noticed a theme in the names, all being named after racehorses, which I have subsequently continued.

Bill & Trudy were kind enough to add me to their Parkmist affix until I became more established and acquired my own affix, taken from where I live.

I have now bred three litters and show the 4 who stayed, with Brynn (Cherryheath’s Mr Mischief) subsequently gaining his title.

I am the WSSC Working Secretary and all of my dogs thoroughly enjoy and have been well placed at working events, Ceri (C. Miss Chief) & Barri (C. Mr Mojito) both winning classes in their time.

I am now showing a youngster, Cai (Chanangel Mr Whodat at Cherryheath – also named after a racehorse) and was delighted to gain his JW before the Pandemic took hold.

I have awarded CCs 4 times at General Championship Shows and have a further appointment but am really looking forward to my judging appointment at this level at the WSSC of SW and thank the Committee for asking me.

Bitches Judge - Mrs Honor Harrison - (Glenbrows)

I have always loved dogs from a very young age. My first dog was Ben, a Jack Russell terrier bought for me by my parents. As soon as I left home at 17 I bought my first Springer Sam, a working ESS. I took him to a dog show but soon found out he didn’t quite fit in, so I decided to train him to the gun.

I really wanted to show dogs and visited Crufts in search of a show ESS. It was then I was introduced to the late Jean Taylor (Cleavehill), who became a great friend and mentor.

I spent a great deal of time at Cleavehill, learning the ropes, choosing the pick of puppies and watching them all move, how to present dogs for the show ring and how to trim, a great passion of mine. I picked my first show puppy from a litter of 9. When I went to collect Toby Jean grinned at me and said “Well, you have chosen the best one in the litter, girl!” She gave him to me and said she would be delighted if I showed him.

From the age of 17 to 29 I had always shown ESS. When Tim and I married he wanted to buy me another ESS to show, and because of my connection with Jean I asked him if we could go visit Cleavehill. Jean did not have any show potential ESS puppies at the time but asked if we would like ‘Ceri,’ a 2 year old WSS bitch that would not show! We went home and thought about it. Three months later Ceri came home to Glenbrows. She became our first Show Champion in Welsh springers and is the foundation of all our homebred Show Champions today.

For many years now I have run my own successful grooming business and one to one tuition for anyone wishing to learn how to trim their own dog for the show ring. May I take this opportunity to thank the Officers and Committee for inviting me to award CC’s at what I consider to be my favourite Welsh Springer Club Show.
