Since publishing the sad news below we have received the following information from Sandra's husband Roy.

Please can you pass on my thanks for all of the phone calls, cards and tributes that I have received for Sandra.

Can you let people know that Sandra's cremation is taking place on Friday 2nd July between 8am and 9am. In keeping with Sandra's wishes for a 'no fuss' send off there will be no one present.

Instead we are asking those that knew her to think of her at this time and remember her in their own way.

If anyone would like to make a donation in her memory they can do so to Welsh Springer Spaniel Rescue and Rehoming through the Welsh Springer Spaniel Club website.

Thank you

Roy

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Sandra Bell (Glanhafon)

Today the club received this sad note from Kay Bryant,

"Roy Palmer has asked me to notify the 4 breed clubs about the death of Sandra Bell.
Sandra passed away peacefully last evening, 14th June 2021, in Shrewsbury Hospice. There won’t be a funeral. She leaves her husband, Roy, son, Anthony, 2 old horses and 5 working cockers."

Sandra will be greatly missed and we sincerely offer our condolences to Roy and family.

She was a great friend to many of our club members, and we will publish their tributes on our website in the coming days.

A tribute from our ex-Working Secretary, Mary Evans

"To my friend in the North" is how addressed my emails to Sandra.

Sandra and Mary 01Other people will have sent tributes about her wonderful achievements at Crufts, (Sandra made me watch every second on video!), about her career as a judge and her and Roy's commitment to the WSSCSW. But I'm here to tell you about my mate, Sandra.

In 2007, we both trod paths unknown as we ventured to turn our girls, Glanhafon Gwennol and Sycharth Catrin into gundogs.

On a working assessment in Brookwood we didn't even know what 'hunting' meant but Sandra and i both consoled each other with "did she really expect us to to do that?"

Together we went from strength to strength. We both passed our Working Gundog Certificate then our Show Gundog Working Certificate.

Then we went out into the real world, with Sandra picking up on a posh shoot in North Wales and me on a small, local shoot here on the Gower. We were so proud of what each other achieved and that we had proved that the Welsh could earn their place in the field.

Sandra enjoyed her role on the shoot so much that she brought working cockers into her 'stable' so that she and Roy could pick up together. I think that Covid was a bitter blow when her shoot had to close for a couple of years.

I talked to her only a few weeks ago when she'd just had her second jab. You didn't tell me you were ill, Sandra!

Here's the fondest of farewells to "…my friend in the North" What fun we had!

Mary Evans, Sycharth

Sandra, together with husband Roy enjoyed much success in the showring in the 90’s and later her interests turning to the Working field.

They had particular success with litter brothers from the Wainfelin kennel, W. Ace of Diamonds (Drum) and W. Arwel (Rhos) who went on to have great show careers, particularly Drum who together with his kennel mate Risinglark Kali did the famous ‘Double’ at Crufts 1997 winning both CC’s and Drum going on to take BOB under Judge Ron Flye, what a fabulous day, a great achievement and one that has not been matched since.

Sandra and Roy were past Committee members of the WSSCSW and were instrumental in setting up and running the Club’s website. Sandra was also a representative for WSS Rescue & Rehoming since 1994 and a past Committee member of the WSSC.

Sandra really enjoyed the working side travelling all over the country to attend training days and working tests gaining success with homebred G. Gwennol.

Glanhafon also bred American Champion G. Gethin whom Jan Janes and myself had the pleasure of meeting in the flesh on our visit to the USA National Specialty in 2013.

Sandra judged the breed on many occasions, Two Breed Club Open Shows and gave her first set of tickets at Bournemouth in 2009 and then WSSC Championship Show in 2011.

My best memory of Sandra was when we went to Amsterdam together to judge the Dutch WSSC Championship Show. We had such a great time, sightseeing and judging , she was the perfect travelling companion.

My sincere condolences to Roy, son Anthony , 2 old horses and 5 Working Cockers.

RIP Sandra, you will be much missed x

Jan Rees
