A long awaited appointment! Thank you for the kind invitation and congratulations to all involved in finding an absolutely super venue.

I found great variation in type today, something we should be aware of as breeders. We are custodians of the breed and as such need to ensure we produce typical Welsh Springers and not generic red and white dogs. On a positive note, temperaments were very good.

Judge: Tim Harrison (Glenbrows)

Class 1 - Veteran Dog (4)

1st - Barkley’s Sh Ch Cherryheath’s Mr Mischief JW. What a way to start! Super dog whose movement belies his age. I still see in him what I saw when I awarded him Best in Show many years ago. Of outstanding type, standing on the best of legs and feet his movement is powerful and accurate. Lovely head with that oh so typical expression, granted, losing his colour, but he has aged with dignity and in my opinion, is not only a credit to his breeder/owner but moreover a credit to the breed. Delighted that my co-judge thought so too, Best Veteran in show.

2nd - Pick’s Llon Ddraig Goch. Another senior gentleman pleasing in both size and type. He too has good bone and a lovely head but just didn’t quite match 1st in spirit and movement today.

3rd - Woodham’s Tobermyn Minstrel Boy

Class 2 - Special Working Dog (1)

1st - Sutherland’s Jacranella Solo. Alone, but a very worthy winner who should not be overlooked. He moves soundly with superb drive from the rear. Presented in excellent condition, he has strong bone without coarseness, great spring and depth of rib. A dog of excellent breed type.

Class 3 - Minor Puppy Dog (4, 1 abs)

1st - Nicoll’s Benoveor Sail On to Antreth. 8 month old boy who has superb character! He took this class with some room to spare; beautiful headed male with a soft expression. He is well boned and stands on good feet. His movement is true and co-ordinated, the more he moved the better he got! Delighted that my co-judge agreed on him being awarded Best Puppy In Show.

2nd - Clarke’s Tigerrock I’m Your Man. Rather coy today, but happy to be handled. This boy, again, super bone and feet, lovely drive from behind and of pleasing type. I feel that when he settles fully to the job in hand, he will definitely be a contender!

3rd - Bennet’s Cerysan Crusader

Class 4 - Puppy Dog (3, 1 abs)

1st - Nicoll’s Benoveor Sail On to Antreth

2nd - Bennet’s Cerysan Crusader. Very much the baby at 6 months, but if they all had a character like this lad, life would be wonderful!

Class 5 - Junior Dog (3, 0)

1st - Clarke’s Tigerrock Magic Woundabout. An exciting young male who handles better than he looks from ringside. Beautifully presented in superb condition, as were all the dogs from this kennel. He has great bone and feet, clean in shoulder line with good return of upper arm; well- developed ribs, strong loin and excellent quarters. His movement is both sound and powerful. He was in my thoughts for top awards but for me, he is a little too strong in head. I’m sure he will provide his owner with many exciting days.

2nd - Hankin’s Julita Rainmaker with Woodelrond. A happy boy of pleasing size and type. He is nicely put together and a lovely clean mover.

3rd - Clarke’s Heniverous Rainbow by Tigerrrock NAF

Class 6 - Yearling (6, 2 abs)

1st - Tolladay’s Bethersden Brigadier. A young male of beautiful type and good middle size. He stands on good legs and the absolute best of feet. He is soundly constructed, excellent spring of rib and well developed loin. His movement is sound and true, excellent drive from behind followed through with good reach in front, co-ordinated and retaining his outline in profile. Very much a spaniel, this male should have a good career.

2nd - Hills-Page’s Llon Camri. An exuberant young man who is nicely made, mature in body and presented in good coat. His tail carriage is a little high for me.

3rd - Hankin’s Julita Rainmaker with Woodelrond

Class 7 - Novice (4, 1 abs)

1st - Nicoll’s Benoveor Sail On to Antreth

2nd - Leary’s Menstonia Meridian of Haslemount. Mature boy of 3 years, pleasing in head and possessing good bone and ribs, his confidence is improving and I’m sure will continue to do so.

3rd - Clarke’s Heniverous Rainbow by Tigerrrock NAF

Class 8 - Post Graduate (4, 0)

1st - Wren’s Llon Derwendar at Gwynmarren. 5 year old, fully mature boy who I found best for type and size in this class. Presented well and in beautiful condition, he has pleasing body properties and is sound in movement.

2nd - Phillipson’s Menstonia Meteor. Very different in type to 1st, a little more upright in build and not quite the balance of 1st. However, he too has good bone and pleases in rib. Sound mover.

3rd - Barkley’s Chanangel Mr Whodat at Cherryheath JW

Class 9 - Limit (5, 1 abs)

1st - Knowles’ Menstonia Minstrel JW. Mature male presented well in full coat. He has great ribs and strong loin but for me, whilst his expression is pleasing his head is not as masculine as I would like. Movement is sound and co-ordinated but I would like more reach and drive. He won the class being more compact than 2nd

2nd - Wren’s Llon Lewys at Gwynmarren. A lovely boy with a better head than 1st. Pleasing neck line and lovely quarters but is a little stretched in proportions.

3rd - Bennett’s Helgen Romeo the Lover for Flyboron

Class 10 - Open (4, 0 abs)

A most challenging class in that the first 3 are all worthy CC winners and the final decisions were based very much on the day as opposed to past observations. I appreciate that my CC and res CC winner are very different but I hope my comments below explain my decision making process.

1st - Worth’s Sh Ch Sarabande Lord of the Dance (AI) JW. Mature masculine male who to be honest impressed me more on handling than from ringside. He has a beautiful head and expression, is of good size and type and of the dogs here today is the one that would look most at home at Glenbrows. He was presented today as a show dog should, in full and clean coat. Lovely in rib and loin, short and strong and standing on good feet. His movement was true and powerful. Very much a Welsh Springer, full of substance and quality. He is a little proud of his tail and I would like the foreleg to be a fraction longer but with the overall virtues I made him my CC winner; a pleasure to do so. In the challenge for Best in Show he insisted on sinking into his shoulders a little which impacted on the overall balance. Res Best in Show.

2nd - Williams’ Isfryn Spot the Difference at Trebettyn. A dog that should never be overlooked for his absolute lovely breed type. He has great limb length, and beautiful forehand construction. Now fully mature, he is developed in rib and loin and has good quarters with an ever wagging tail. His movement is sound and true with good reach and drive. A masculine dog with no hint of coarseness. However, to be critical he doesn’t have the best of feet and is lacking the work in his head that I would like, two areas where the first dog impressed. But overall this is very much a Welsh Springer and in my humble opinion would be a worthy champion. My pleasure to award him the Res CC.

3rd - Clarke’s Sh Ch Ferndel High Fidelity with Tigerrock Sh CM Sh Ex. I have to mention this boy, a credit to his owner, spot on for size and condition, a good dog that has been a great ambassador for the breed. I believe I awarded him his first championship show 1st place and I’m delighted he has gone on to achieve great things.

Class 11 - Special Beginners (3, 1 abs)

1st Nicoll’s Benoveor Sail On to Antreth. The more he showed the better he looked and moved!

2nd - Gough’s Julita Rukestar. Lovely mature boy who showed well, masculine and good strong bone.

Class 12 - Mr Danny Pritchard Special Memorial Stakes (3, 0 abs)

1st Attwood’s Ir Sh Ch Kylowen Drym Sh CM. Mature male of good type. He has a lovely head and expression, great bone. Presented in beautiful, full coat he owned the ring with his powerful movement. In my thoughts too for final decisions

2nd - Barkley’s Cherryheath’s Mr Mojito. Nice type of dog, well boned and bodied, good forehand. Today, couldn’t match the movement of 1st.

3rd - Blackford’s Amblelight Galetea

Class 13 - Good Citizens Dog Scheme (5, 0 abs)

1st - Attwood’s Ir Sh Ch Kylowen Drym Sh CM

2nd - Brown’s Bowdonia Ozzie. Pleasing mature boy, nice type and good size. Moves with drive but not quite the forehand and hence balance of 1st.

3rd - Woodham’s Glynell Jiffy

I would like to thank the committee for the opportunity to judge at the club’s 40th anniversary show. It was indeed a great privilege as I am a founder member of the club and have served on the committee for over 40 years.

Many thanks to my efficient stewards Anita and Rowland who kept the ring running smoothly and to the exhibitors who gave me the opportunity to go over their lovely dogs.

Class 14 - Veteran Bitch (3, 2 abs)

1st - Blackfords Amblelight Sunglow. Stood alone but well worthy of a first place. A 9 year old who is super for the type and has a lovely head and expression. In excellent condition and still holds a good topline. Correct neck and shoulder placement and strong quarters. Moved beautifully. Shame she went lame for the challenge.

Class 15 - Special Working Bitch (0)

Class 16 - Minor Puppy Bitch (3)

1st - Morgan’s Benoveor Endless Love. 8 months old and very raw as can be expected. Has a very sweet head and lovely expression. Good overall shape with correct topline and quarters. Moved well, very promising.

2nd - Lockie’s Benoveor Truly. Litter sister to the winner and same remarks apply. Just a little at the leggy stage at the moment and a shade long in body. Another promising baby.

3rd - Casey’s Tigerrock Lit De Roses (NAF)

Class 17 - Puppy Bitch (3)

1st - Morgan’s Benoveor Endless Love

2nd - Lockie’s Benoveor Truly

3rd - Casey’s Tigerrock Lit De Roses (NAF)

Class 18 - Junior Bitch (1, 1 abs)

Class 19 - Yearling Bitch (2)

1st - Worth’s Sarabande Wild at Heart (Ai). Broken coated bitch with a lovely outline. Good head and eye, enough bone and substance. Lovely depth and spring of rib. Sound in quarters and moved well. Just at the leggy stage and would prefer a better tailset. Overstretched in the challenge which spoiled her topline. Shown in excellent coat and condition.

2nd - Cooper’s Gilstonia Snow Moon. Lovely type with a super head. Good neck and shoulders. Good ribbing and topline. Preferred hind movement of winner.

Class 20 - Novice Bitch (2)

1st - Worth’s Sarabande Wild at Heart (Ai)

2nd - Morgan’s Benoveor Endless Love

Class 21 - Post Graduate Bitch (7, 2 abs)

1st - Morlidge’s Kurzeja Kalina. Really loved this girl who is just my type. So well balanced and no sign of exaggeration. She sports a beautiful head so full of expression and has a super outline. Great neck and shoulders. Good front and rear angulations. She moved beautifully and was close up for top honours. Shown in excellent coat and condition.

2nd - Revill’s Julita Ryveeta JW. Another I liked a great deal. What a lovely headed bitch. Well made all through just a shade long in back and not quite the topline of my winner.

3rd - Tew’s Pamick’s Jazzy Ah Girl

Class 22 - Limit Bitch (6, 2 abs)

1st - Hills-Page’s Llon Llysiaur Hedydd. This bitch is just up my street. Super in outline with a good topline and ribbing. Loved her head and expression. She has excellent quarters which she used well. A truly lovely Welsh who was also close to top honours.

2nd - McIlwaine and Reynolds’ – Benoveor Can’t Buy Me Love. Another beautifully headed bitch who has a super outline and is well made all through. Just needed to make more of herself on the move today.

3rd - Waller’s Isfryn Lady Godiva at Fireglow JW

Class 23 - Open Bitch (6, 1 abs)

What an excellent class this was. I could have easily given five red cards. My final decisions came down to breed type.

1st - Sutherland’s Jacranella Serenade. Have loved this bitch since I first saw her as a 6 month old puppy. She just oozes breed type from beautiful head to her compact well balanced body. She has the best neck and shoulders, excellent legs and feet and shows so much strength while retaining her femininity. Presented and handled beautifully. I was so pleased to award her second CC and was delighted my co-judge, Tim, agreed she should be best in show. CC BIS

2nd - Pick’s Llon Blodyn Ymenyn. Very close up to winner, another with a lovely head. Excels in breed type, good neck and shoulder placement and strong in topline. Well developed quarters and strong driving movement. RCC.

3rd - Frost’s Sh Ch Bushwacker Something about Mary

Class 24 - Special Beginners Bitch (2)

1st - Lockie’s Benoveor Truly

2nd - Casey’s Tigerrock Lit De Roses (NAF). 8 month old baby, very raw at the moment and needs to gain her confidence. She has a good head and eye and is well made through. Everything in the right place she just needs time.

Class 25 - Mrs Mary Payne Special Memorial Stakes (6, 3 abs)

1st - Attwood’s Kylowen Demelza. This is a lovely bitch, super breed type and of a lovely size. She has an excellent well chiselled head and good eye shape and colour giving that lovely Welsh expression. Another with good ribbing and strong well made quarters. Moved beautifully and was considered for top honours in an excellent line up.

2nd - Cooper’s Gilstonia Snow Moon

Class 26 - Good Citizens Dog Scheme - Bitch (2)

1st - Attwood’s Kyleowen Demelza.

2nd - Barkley’s Cherryheath’s Miss Velocity JW. A strong well made bitch of good type as always from this breeder. Good head and eye neck and shoulders and held her topline well. Just a shade bigger than I like. Moved well but could not match the winner for enthusiasm.
