CRITIQUE

150920 open show 304
The Welsh Springer Spaniel Club of South Wales held an open show at The Drill Hall, Chepstow with a lovely entry of top quality dogs to go over.

It is certainly a lovely experience to go to a club show and see such a lovely atmosphere – I was made really welcome with a fantastic committee giving value for money with a lovely decorated hall, excellent food and a warm welcome for exhibitors and visitors.

Good stewards, Brian & Anita Shears who made my job easier allowing me time to spend with the dogs and particularly allowing me extra time to give to newer exhibitors. Jan Rees, chairman, you are very lucky to have such a hardworking committee, they are worth their weight in gold & can think of lots of clubs who would love to have such a team behind them.

No wonder this Club gets such good entries from so far away – it is well worth the trip to visit this friendly Club for their next show. Only one disappointment – there was only one Welsh Cake left for me!

DOG CLASSES

Class 1 - Minor Puppy Dog (4)

1. Graham's: Taimere's Twister Round Nyliram - what a lovely youngster to start with, still a baby but such quality, of a lovely size & outline, lovely head & expression, excellent neck & shoulders, lovely hindquarters & just the right amount of ribcage for age, when he moved in profile held his head correctly & also his topline which when set up he sometimes dropped but as he muscles up this with tighten up & strengthen, well boned legs, this balanced boy took my attention & was pleased to give him BPD & BPIS;
2. Graham's: Taimere's Time to Tango with Nyliram - slightly longer at present but again this will tighten with age, again that lovely head & expression with a good neck & well laid shoulders, well muscled hindquarters, well coated with good bone & feet, again an excellent mover & I bet these two will change places many times;
3. Attwood's: Kylowen Drym
4. Ellis': Shannara Total Eclipse

1. Graham's: Taimere's Twister Round Nyliram

Reynolds': Kamunting Cast Away to Benoveor - not an overlarge dog but well within the Standard, loved his hindquarters & movement which took the class, well balanced boy with a masculine head & expression with a lovely eye & well set ears, good neck & shoulders, well coated & lovely profile movement with a good front extension;
2. Jenkins': Brynseiri Afan - not so balanced as 1 but a good sort, lacking coat at present which makes him look taller than he is, very masculine in head & expression with enough neck & a good shoulder placement, good depth & width of rbcage & a good loin & well set & carried tail, showed & moved well.

Class 4 - Special Yearling Dog (4)

1. Harrison's: Glenbrows Trademark JW - I knew as soon as he came in that he would be the dog to beat today, he just oozed quality & type to me, cracking dog with an excellent head carriage in profile movement using his well made front assembly to advantage to effortlessly move forward & his well muscled hindquarters powered him easily round the ring, such a masculine head & expression, he has a kind eye & well set ears, excellent coat put down in wonderful condition, he is balanced & has an excellent ribcage & strong loin giving a good topline held set up & moving. At the end of the day could not take my eyes off him & he became BD & BIS;

Worth's: Sarabande Perfect Storm (AI) - flashy dog, no missing him in a class for he is well coated & shows well giving a good outline with his front construction & strong hindquarters, good depth & width of chest, masculine head & expression, just preferred 1’s lay of shoulder. Moved well back & front but a bit fast for me in profile movement but still a dog who will always be there or thereabout;

2. Evans': Typica Kingfisher - different type completely to 1 but still a nice dog with lots of coat which detracts from his front assembly giving him too much width between his front legs, very masculine in outlook with a masculine head & expression & a good eye, well boned legs & feet, good neck & shoulders, good topline & tailset, head well carried in profile movement where he covered the ground with ease;
3. Dawson's: Ferndel Fool Hardy

Class 12 - Veteran Dog  (2)

1. Harrison's: Sh Ch Glenbrows Picture This JW ShCM - beautiful dog of quality who was so well presented, this balanced dog shows no signs of age & I was thrilled to have the chance to go over him, put down in excellent muscletone, moved true with the correct forereach & drive with the correct length of hock to compliment the picture, excellent neck & shoulders with a strong loin & excellent hindquarters, in excellent coat & condition & fought a strong battle to win here & then to be only beaten by his grandson. BV & RBD;
2. Baguley's: Kylowen Gerrans ShCM - smaller boy who is slightly wider in front but moved so well for his age, in full coat, masculine head & expression, good neck & forequarters, balanced body leading to a good hindquarter, nice type who is a credit to his owner.

SPECIAL AWARDS

During the lunch-break of the main show three classes of Special Awards were judged by:

150920 open show 183Miss Zoe Jackson (Ardinia)

I would like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge the special classes at this well organised show and to my steward for their hard work. There was a wonderful, friendly atmosphere as always. It was a pleasure to judge some lovely dogs and I would like to thank the exhibitors for entering them under me, I had some very hard decisions to make in all the classes.

Class A Special Junior Dog or Bitch (3)

1. Reynolds’: Kamunting Cast Away to Benoveor - A handsome young man who had the most appealing head and expression with a lovely dark eye. Good front with well boned, straight legs. Excellent bend of stifle and well set on tail. His powerful movement and beautiful finish won him the class.
2. Ellis': Shannara Total Eclipse - a real baby but really enjoyed his time in the ring. Everything is in the right place and he just needs time to settle to the job and grow into his frame. A promising puppy.
3. Courtney's: Sycharth Land of My Fathers

Class B - Special Post Graduate Dog or Bitch (4:1)

1. Revill's: Julita Rokahlua - This bitch needs to be handled to be appreciated. She has a pretty head with dark eye. Strong neck into well placed shoulders. Straight front, well ribbed body and good bend of stifle. Her movement was strong and she powered round the ring with a wagging tail. In Excellent coat and condition and shown to advantage.
2. Woodward's: Bowdonia Time To Dream - Woodward’s Bowdonia Time To Dream – Pushed 1st all the way. Real welsh type and so very typical. She has the most beautiful head and expression. Same comments as above but lost out as she was just carrying too much weight on her shoulders which spoilt her outline whilst stood and on the move.
3. Madeley's: Barhi Flaming Star at Maytag

Class C - Special Len Morgan Memorial Open Stakes Dog or Bitch (5)

A pleasure to judge this class. Some wonderful examples of the breed.

1. Lewin's: Sh Ch Ferndel Voyage to Vynesbrook JW ShCM - I have admired this bitch from the side of the ring and she did not disappoint when I put my hands on her. My notes says wow! She has a beautiful head and expression and a dark eye. Straight front, with a good layback of shoulder and straight well boned legs. Well sprung ribs and short coupled, compact body. Good bend of stifle and well let down hocks which she used to advantage on the move. Powered round the ring and handled to advantage. Couldn’t take my eyes off her!
2. Leary’s: Menstonia Minty of Haslemount - An extremely pretty lady with lovely expression and dark eye. She has a straight front with well boned legs and tight feet. Well ribbed and short coupled body. Good bend of stifle and well let down hocks. Her movement was steady but just didn’t have the showmanship of 1st.
3. Thomas': Sh Ch Bowdonia Moment to Shine - she completed a trio of lovely bitches. Thank you for entering her under me.
4. Philipson's: Menstonia Marksman
VHC. Evans': Sycharth Hob Y Derri Dando
