JUDGE’S CRITIQUE

DOG CLASSES

Judge: Mrs Kathy Moore (Walgoreg)

This was my first time judging for this club and I was given a truly warm Welsh welcome. I would like to thank the hard-working committee for inviting me to judge at this well-run show held at a lovely venue and also my efficient ring stewards. Thanks must also go to the exhibitors for the super entry, for the immaculate presentation of their dogs and for creating a lovely atmosphere around the ring.

I was delighted that on the decision of the referee, Mrs Jan Janes, my dog CC winner was declared Best in Show.

JUDGE’S CRITIQUE

BITCH CLASSES

Judge: Mrs Jane Sutherland (Jacranella)

I would like to thank the committee for this opportunity to award CCs at the WSSCSW Championship Show, this has been a long anticipated appointment and as ever, the show was superbly run, the warm welcome and a lovely atmosphere along with such a fantastic venue make this a thoroughly enjoyable event.

I’d like to thank my two stewards who did a marvellous job of marshalling the classes and keeping everything running smoothly.

First and foremost, it’s important to consider that the Welsh Springer is a truly dual-purpose gundog, the basic qualities of soundness and construction appropriate to function are essential, this was variable however and my placings reflected this.

This is a beautiful breed that marries strength without coarseness, and power without bulk, combined into neat package that should be able to demonstrate an ability to cover the ground effortlessly with driving action. The Standard isn’t extensive, but this places more weight on the specificities, it states, “Not leggy” and I feel that this is an area where close attention is needed at present.

I was extremely pleased with my main winners, who, I felt, encapsulated what I was looking for.

Class 14 - Veteran Bitch (4:0)

1st      Attwood’s Kylowen Demelza VW

…a very typical bitch, 8 years old but doesn’t show it. Good head and neck, nicely laid shoulder and plenty of ribbing, moved soundly and with drive on tight feet. Shown in excellent coat, well angulated throughout.

2nd      Barkley’s Cherryheath’s Miss Velocity JW

…another lovely bitch, larger cast than 1. but so well made and typical. Lovely head with a kind eye, well set onto a strong neck that flowed into her shoulder, best of feet and correct in angulation throughout, moved well. Could change places on another day.

3rd      Pick’s Sh Ch Llon Lili Bengam

Class 15 - Special Working Bitch (1:0)

1st      Cooper’s Isfryn Lady Grey of Gilstonia

Class 16 - Minor Puppy Bitch (0:0)

Class 17 - Puppy Bitch (3:0)

11 month old puppy that I liked for overall type and compact size. Appealing head with a kind, merry eye and expression, lovely front assembly with a lovely strong neck that flowed into her nicely laid shoulder, Well ribbed and short, strong loin. Correct angles for and aft, moved with great verve on excellent feet, shown in excellent coat and condition. Best Puppy Bitch and very pleased to see her go Best Puppy in Show.

2nd      Moore’s Kidenoan Standover Marek

9 month old puppy, feminine in head with a fine dark eye. Nice reach of neck into well laid shoulder. Not the substance of 1 and less settled today but moved out nicely.

3rd      Buckwell’s Killenna One Moment in Time

Class 18 - Junior Bitch (5:2)

1st      Blackford’s Amblelight Adhara

…loved this bitch for type and size. Beautiful expressive head and expression, best of fronts with excellent neck into strong, well laid shoulder, well off for ribbing and strong in loin. Excelled in outline with strong topline, held on the move, demonstrating her sound construction throughout. Correct angles fore and aft, she moved out with confidence, demonstrating the breeds characteristic active and quick movement, driving from the rear, on excellent feet. Pushed hard today for top honours and will challenge the best in time. Will watch with interest.

2nd      Tew’s Pamicks Dream With Me

…this bitch is from a different mould to 1 being taller and longer in cast. Pleasing head, good reach of neck and nice shoulder, tight feet. Unsettled on the move today, and gave her handler a hard time.

She carried herself with confidence on the move, oozing quality, and demonstrating her balanced construction perfectly. Best of feet and excellent driving action without any exaggeration in front movement. 2nd      Mesdames Revill and Monday’s Julita Ryveeta JW

…another lovely, stylish bitch. Beautiful type and construction, she was close up to 1 and much of the same comments apply, she was less settled on the move and this just cost her the first. She excels in her overall type and balance, best of heads and expression with an imp of mischief peeping through. Superb neck and shoulder assembly, excellent depth and spring of rib, short strong loin and correct angulation throughout. Shown in superb coat and hard condition.

3rd      Johnston’s Nalydris Hakuna Matata

Class 23 - Open Bitch (3:0)

1st      Harrison’s Sh Ch Glenbrows Rhapsody JW

…have admired this bitch for a while and was not disappointed. She demonstrated the attributes that I look for in a Welsh Springer, strength without coarseness and power without bulk.

She is balanced throughout. Pleasing head with melting expression, excellent reach of neck correctly set into her well laid shoulder, she excels in her strong, deep ribbing and short strongly coupled loin. Straight, well boned front and excellent feet. A set of muscular quarters with well developed second thigh completes the picture. She moved soundly and positively, with the quick and active, smooth movement, with abundant drive from the rear, covering the ground easily and effortlessly that I was looking for. Delighted to award her the CC.

2nd      Hills-Page’s Llon Llysiaur Hedydd

Class 26 - Good Citizen Dog Scheme – Bitch (4:0)

1st      Jones’ Sh Ch Julita Rumours at Trosley
