I would like to thank all of the exhibitors for accepting my placings with such good humour, I was honoured to be asked to judge at a breed club show and thoroughly enjoyed my day.
For my class winners I was looking for, wherever possible, what I considered to be typical Welsh Springer Spaniels with heads showing stop and chiselling below the eye and soft and kind expressions together with sound and happy movement.
I was delighted with my final line-up of dogs – showing type in plenty.
CLASS 1 – VETERAN DOG (5:1 abs)
1st Brown’s Bowdonia Ozzie – Have always liked this dog and today he caught my eye on entering and moving round the ring, excellent balanced type. Now 7 years old but has lost none of his enthusiasm. Very pleasing head and kindly expressive eyes, deep well ribbed body, good bone, slightly greying in muzzle now but otherwise presented with rich red gleaming coat, tight feet, good shape held on the move with a constantly wagging tail. Today delighted to award him BVD and with the agreement of my co-judge BVIS
2nd Woodhams’ Tobermyn Minstrel Boy – Well boned, slightly longer than 1, well coated, very pleasing head, good hind angulation, moved very happily with drive and purpose on good feet
3rd Attwood’s Ir Sh Ch Kylowen Drym Sh CM
CLASS 2 – SPECIAL WORKING DOG (2)
1st Sutherland’s Jacranella Solo Honest and typical, good body & bone, the best of feet, typy head with good stop and chiselling below the eye, good front angulation, coat in good condition, correct stifle, if I am going to be slightly critical would like slightly more height, moved happily and with enthusiasm to win this class however couldn’t quite match the OD in the final challenge RCC
2nd Smith’s Isfryn Peeping Tom JW non-flashy and balanced dog, well presented in good coat & condition, good front and shoulders, firm body with a muscular loin, moved soundly on firm feet
CLASS 3 – MINOR PUPPY DOG (2)
1st Evans’ Glenbrows Born To Be very raw 7 month old dog and would have liked more body but won the class on type and happy movement, straight front with correct hind angulation, moved happily on tight feet
2nd Worth’s Sarabande Name Of The Game (Ai) not the ring presence of 1 giving handler a hard time, up to size well coated young dog, very pleasing head with kind eyes,
CLASS 4 – PUPPY DOG (4)
1st Graham’s Don’s Bold As Brass With Nyliram (Imp Swe) nearly 10 months old well bodied young dog, well boned and coated presenting a lovely balanced outline, not a strong head but still obviously a dog, pleasing expression, good reach of neck with a firm body, straight front, excellent shoulders, moved happily and with enthusiasm on good feet. Pleased to award him BPD
2nd Stevenson’s Mymmsbrook Matador With Blythway slightly older and slightly longer than 1 but still presenting a compact outline, mature, well coated young dog, loved his head, well boned, good hind angulation, moved very happily with drive and purpose
3rd Hillard’s Benoveor No Easy Way Out

May I thank the officers and Committee for this appointment. It was my absolute pleasure to award CC’s to the bitches at the WSSCSW Championship Show, something I have been looking forward to for a long time. The home of our lovely breed, this show really has it all, always a warm welcome awaits, a pleasant atmosphere, and the best venue by far in all my years as an exhibitor.
When breeding, in my opinion it is fundamental to make sure that the basics of any gundog qualities like soundness are considered, I found that this was sadly lacking in some of my higher classes which affected my placings. A Welsh Springer is a beautiful spaniel, which should have heart room, well sprung ribs and depth of chest, sloping shoulders and must be able to cover the ground with good width behind. All this said and done I was extremely pleased with my main winners. My Co Judge, Sharon Barkley, seemed to appreciate the same judging ethics as me. Which made our final decisions together a real pleasure and no need for the referee. It was lovely Judging with such a likeminded Judge.

1st Ritche’s Sarabande Dancing Queen at Slapestones (Ai), 7 months. This puppy is a stunner, little round in eye, forgiven because she was a little fearful, I caught a glimpse of her when she settled into her stride for just a second going round, she made me shiver. Nice head, Balanced body, lovely ribs and fore chest, good cat like feet, sound coming and going, she is beautiful, glad she’s in the hands of an experienced exhibitor, who I’m sure will get the best from her.
