YOUR JUDGES

Dogs Judge – Mr Richard Morris (Lascoed)

richard morris 2016It is an honour to be associated with this notable breed club being a founder member over forty five years ago and a privilege to be invited to judge dogs.

The breed has evolved much in that time and breeders can only ponder on the kennel sizes of the past which offered valuable stability and choice. My first Tregwillym "Welshie" arrived in 1975 and were bred and run on with the Labradors until 1990. Two stud book winners emerged against strong competition together with a Crufts class winner.

My first championship show appointment for WSS was 2007 and I am now approved for all the breeds in the gundog group at CC level. I consider I have a foot in both the breed specialist and allrounder camps for Welsh Springer Spaniels.

It will be a joy again to assess your beautifully presented dogs and get close in the ring to the unique temperament that is the essence of the breed. I wish you all a friendly, enjoyable and successful event.

Richard Morris

Bitches Judge - Mrs Jan Rees - (Typica)

jan rees 2024I have owned Welsh Springers since 1969 when I found and took home a ‘stray’. Not knowing whether he was an English Springer or Welsh set me a task to find out. I named him Skipper and he stayed several years and that was the beginning of a 50 year love affair with this wonderful breed.

Breeding our first litter in 1975 under the affix Typica and with expert guidance of Harold Newman to the prominent sire Sh Ch Progress of Pencelli set me on a lifetime course which we’ve thoroughly enjoyed.

The Welsh show scene was extremely strong at this time and I like to feel that I watched and learned from the best - not only Harold but Cliff Payne (Tregwillym) and Noel and Dodo Hunton - Morgan’s (Dalati) a wonderful apprenticeship to have.

I joined the WSSC in 1974 holding the position of Cup Steward for 10 years. I am currently a Vice President of the Club. I am a founder member, life member, Vice President and currently Chairperson of the WSSCSW, a position I have held for some 16 years.

Notable successes have been Sh Ch Typica Countryman JW ShCM, T. Fieldsman JW and Sh Ch Coedybrain Carys at Typica JW ShCM but my pride and joy must be Digger, Ch Typica Goldigger JW ShCM not only gaining his Show Champion title at 26 months but going on to gain his ‘ Full’ Champion status in 2006 making my dream come true of breeding and handling my own dual purpose champion.

Since then, T Kingfisher, T Country Maid, T Flash Harry JW, T Seren Aur and more recently Sh Ch Hudolus Rhys Henllys at Typica JW Sh CM has given me so much enjoyment and success.

Judging started in 1981 going on to award my first set of CC’s in 1986 at SWKA and have awarded about 18 sets since then, judging the WSSC Championship Show on 3 occasions WSSCSW and SEWSSC since. I have been privileged to judge overseas at the Swedish WSSK on 3 occasions, the Spaniel Specialty in Finland and the WSSC of the Netherlands and have attended the WSSC of America Specialty twice.

In 2007 I had the ultimate honour of judging our wonderful breed at Crufts realising a lifelong ambition. I am very much looking forward to judging again at WSSCSW.

Jan Rees
