Penllergare is a very important location in the history of the development of the Welsh Springer Spaniel and it's a place we've enjoyed a few Welshie Walks in the past.

The last time we had a club walk here the weather was slightly damp (hammering with rain) but nonetheless, Mr Stuart Hemsley-Rice, a leading member of the Trust that manages the woodland, led us on a guided walk of the woodland trail and recounted the history of the Estate, and the links to the origins of the Welsh Springer Spaniel by the landowners and gamekeepers of Penllergare Estate and nearby Llanharan in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

There is a dedicated group of volunteers who look after Penllergare and they have worked tirelessly on many projects around the Woodlands and the jewel in their crown is a brand new, modern visitor centre, with their Community Coffee shop now fully open to the public – we called in there a month or so back with our dogs and we can certainly vouch for the quality of their tea and cakes.

They have also installed a splendid new wood carving of "Llew", a Welsh Springer Spaniel, in recognition of the birthplace of this beautiful breed of dog.

Our last walk here took in the upper level of the woodlands which was splendid in its autumn colours. This time we intend to take in alonger walk around the lower level around the lake and before returning to the Visitor Centre where we can have a snack and a cuppa.

Even if you haven't got a Welshie yet want to learn about the breed you will be welcome to meet our dogs and talk to some very knowledgeable Welshie owners and give you some tips and an idea of what it is like to own one of the few breed of dogs that originated in Wales.

Note - there is a charge for car parking.
